Luwuk, 19 Desember 2024 – Insiden tenggelamnya kapal nelayan KMN Afan Jaya 01 terjadi di perairan Desa Bunga, Kecamatan Luwuk Utara, Kabupaten Banggai, Sulawesi Tengah.

Luwuk, December 19, 2024 – The fishing vessel KMN Afan Jaya 01 sank in the waters of Desa Bunga, North Luwuk District, Banggai Regency, Central Sulawesi. The vessel, captained by Zaka Hidayah and carrying 15 crew members, departed from Luwuk fish auction dock on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at 2:00 AM local time, heading to a fish aggregation device (rompong) near Tanjung waters.
Upon arriving at the rompong location at around 5:00 AM, fishing activities commenced. However, during the loading of the fish catch, the vessel suddenly tilted to the right. A technical failure in the water pump (alcon) allowed water to enter the vessel, worsening its stability. Despite efforts to repair the pump, the vessel eventually sank before the alcon could be restored to operation.
Family members of the fishermen promptly reported the incident to the Luwuk Class II Port Authority Office (UPP). The UPP team coordinated with Basarnas (National Search and Rescue Agency) to conduct a rescue operation. Thanks to swift action, all 15 crew members were successfully rescued and safely returned to Luwuk Port.
The incident occurred at coordinates 0°57.339’ S and 122°55.832’ E, near the rompong in Desa Bunga. Preliminary findings suggest a combination of technical failure, namely a malfunctioning water pump, and human error, specifically overloading, as the primary causes of the incident.
The Luwuk Class II UPP team, together with Basarnas, is conducting evaluations to prevent similar incidents in the future. The rescued crew members have safely returned to their homes, while KMN Afan Jaya 01 has been declared sunk.
This incident highlights the importance of ensuring technical readiness and proper load management before setting sail to mitigate potential risks.
