ENGLISH VERSION

On October 22, 2024. Pulau Bunyu – Ahmad Maulana from UPP Pulau Bunyu reported the chronology of an accident involving the KM Wangi Cendana, a wooden cargo ship with a gross tonnage of 63 GT and four crew members aboard. The vessel had departed from Pier 1 at Pulau Bunyu Port, heading for Sembakung (Tersus Pertamina EP).

Chronology of Events:

The ship was scheduled to depart from Pulau Bunyu at 16:00 LT but did not leave the port until 16:45 LT. At that time, the vessel was already facing rough weather conditions, with waves reaching a height of approximately 1.5 meters. Seawater began flooding the deck, entering the engine room, which caused part of the ship to sink.

The crew immediately attempted to pump the water out, but the efforts were unsuccessful. As the situation worsened, the captain made the decision to beach the ship. Once beached, the vessel listed to the left, causing the Chief Engineer (KKM) to panic and jump into the sea without a life jacket. The remaining crew members quickly attempted to rescue the Chief Engineer by jumping into the sea with a lifebuoy. However, the strong currents prevented them from finding the victim.

The search for the missing crew member is still ongoing by the rescue team.
