Berau – Insiden tenggelamnya tongkang Intan Kelana 23 terjadi setelah proses pemuatan batubara di jetty Suaran, milik PT. Berau Coal.

Meskipun demikian, proses pelepasan tongkang (cast off) dari jetty tetap dilanjutkan.

Sekitar pukul 06.00 WITA, kemiringan tongkang semakin bertambah parah.

ENGLISH VERSION

Berau – The sinking of the barge Intan Kelana 23 occurred following the loading of coal at the Suaran jetty, owned by PT. Berau Coal. The incident took place on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 23:25 WITA when the barge was loaded with a total cargo of 7,537.139 metric tons (MT) of coal.

The loading process was completed on Friday, October 18, 2024, around 01:45 WITA. However, after the loading was finished, the barge was reported to be leaning to the left. The surveyor on site had informed the Master Loading that the barge was listing with a tilt of up to 65 cm. Despite this, the barge was cast off from the jetty.

By 06:00 WITA, the barge's tilt had worsened. The crew took the initiative to ground the barge in an attempt to minimize further risks. However, the unstable coal cargo began to shift, causing the barge to tilt further before eventually sinking at the coordinates 02°01'1352" N and 117°48'0402" E. The cause is suspected to be related to the loading process while the barge was already tilted, possibly allowing water to enter through the manhole.

This incident has raised concerns about the safety of the cargo and potential environmental impacts. As of this report, there have been no further updates regarding evacuation efforts or follow-up actions by the relevant authorities. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the sinking and the necessary steps to address the situation.
